Finding your signature urban street style

At KRUZIN we realise that streetwear fashion trends can be quite confusing for the athleisure novice, so we’ve asked our panel of urban luxury and culture experts to share their hard-won wisdom on putting together a signature look. Here’s what they had to say:

Decode your current uniform & then update it

The easiest way of finding your signature urban style is to build it on top of your basic style silhouette. Here’s something that very little people realise – even if you haven’t done so on purpose, you already have a style uniform, you just don’t know it yet.

So how do you figure out what that is? Simple, ask yourself the following questions:

In which outfit do you feel on top of the world? We’ve all had at least one occasion where we’ve looked in the mirror and went ‘nailed it’. Chances are this is the one outfit you invariably reach for when you need to feel on top of your game. Use this as a starting point to determine your basic style silhouette and go from there. For instance, if your go-to feel-good outfit is a pair of skinnies and a flouncy top, you could update it by trying a pair of leggings with mesh panels and pairing it with an unstructured boyfriend top.

Which item crops up in your closet repeatedly? Open your wardrobe and take a look; do you see any recurring patterns? If you notice a lot of tapered pants, this might be your signature item. Now all you have to do is find an urban luxury equivalent like a fitted tracksuit bottom and you’re good to go.

Which apparel items always have you gasping for air? We all have that one particular fashion item that makes us woozy with longing, but we are too afraid to try. It might be a statement hat, a daring bag or a bold jacket. Whatever it is, stop dithering and just go for it. We give you permission to throw caution to the wind and shake things up. You only live once after all!

When in doubt, start from the bottom up

When you just start to get to grips with urban culture, it can be daunting to put together a brand new look from scratch. One of the best-kept styling secrets employed by professional stylists the world over is starting with the kicks. I.e. choose a pair of shoes that you are

comfortable with and work from there. In the case of the urban luxury trend, you’ll probably go with something along the lines of a pair of sneakers in a bold print or metallic hue. Once you have this anchor point in place, it becomes a lot easier to put together the rest of the look. All you have to do is find some bottoms that suit your frame and work your way up to the top one step at a time – easy as pie.

Draw inspiration from fashion icons

The saying goes that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and this notion also pertains to the world of urban fashion. A quick and easy way to find your signature urban style is to keep your eye on the fashion icons that pique your interest. When it comes to urban couture, ladies can look towards established fashion icons like Heidi Klum, Selena Gomez, Brooke Burke-Charvet, Kate Hudson, Rita Ora, Carrie Underwood, Shay Mitchell, Jessica Simpson, Julianne Hough, Beyoncé, Behati Prinsloo and Whitney Port; while gents can draw inspiration from the likes of Donald Glover, Jared Leto, Andre 3000, Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Pharrell and Rick Owens. Many of these urban icons have their own fashion lines, and another simple way of staying up to date with their looks is to keep tabs on their Instagram accounts.
